Haktech: Twitter sues major spammers and tool providers

 Twitter sues major spammers

As more and more people use Twitter, it's inevitable that the service has also brought in people and groups who want to use messaging techniques that serve to spam unwanted and even malicious "Tweets" to its subscribers. Today, Twitter's official blog said that it was going to take action against a few of the biggest such abusers of the service.

"This morning, we filed suit in federal court in San Francisco against five of the most aggressive tool providers and spammers. With this suit, we’re going straight to the source. By shutting down tool providers, we will prevent other spammers from having these services at their disposal."

Twitter also announced other plans today to protect its subscribers from unwanted spam messages. The blog post stated that earlier in the week, the company started a new system designed to curtail a new type of @mention spam that has cropped up in Twitter messages.

In addition, it is now using its website link shortener to find out if any links mentioned in Twitter messages lead to sites that deliver malware or other unwanted content. Twitter said this action will help them put the brakes on "hundreds of thousands of abusive accounts."
